The phone is the microphone, your earbuds are the amplifier.

It lives under the Hearing control, not in any audio menu:

  1. Open Settings, then Control Center, and add the Hearing control (the ear icon).
  2. Connect your AirPods, Beats or hearing aids the usual way.
  3. Open Control Center and tap the ear icon.
  4. Tap Live Listen.
  5. Set the phone down near the sound you want, a few feet away from you.

Why Live Listen to a Bluetooth speaker will not work

Two separate limits stack up.

The first is the output list. Live Listen is wired to a specific set of Apple and Made for iPhone hearing devices. A generic Bluetooth speaker, a soundbar, a car stereo, an AirPlay receiver: none of them qualify, and there is no toggle that adds them. You can pair a UE Boom perfectly, see it as the system output for music, tap the ear icon, and Live Listen will still refuse to send anything to it.

The second is the purpose. Live Listen assumes the microphone and the listener are in different places, which is exactly the assumption that breaks when the loudspeaker sits in the same room as the phone. Put a live microphone and an amplified speaker in one room and you get the howl, which has its own physics and its own fixes.

Searching for "live listen speaker" mostly turns up people trying to force this. There is no hidden setting, no configuration profile and no Shortcut that adds a Bluetooth speaker to the Live Listen output list. If a page claims otherwise, it is describing a different feature or inventing one.

When iPhone Live Listen is not working

If Live Listen is the right feature for you and it has stopped behaving, the usual causes are dull ones:

  • The Hearing control is not in Control Center. It is not there by default. Settings, Control Center, add it.
  • The wrong device is connected. If audio is currently routed to a car, a speaker or a wired output, Live Listen has nowhere to go. Reconnect the AirPods and check the route.
  • Distance. It runs over the same Bluetooth link as everything else, so walk far enough from the phone and it drops out or stutters. Leaving the phone in the next room is asking too much.
  • Ear detection. With automatic ear detection on, taking an AirPod out pauses the stream.
  • Another app owns the microphone. A call, a voice memo or a video recording can take priority.

Whether it matters depends on the job. Under about 20 ms nobody notices. Around 40–50 ms is where lip sync starts to look wrong on video. Past roughly 100 ms it feels like a bad phone call, and hearing your own voice come back at you is the most sensitive case of all, far more so than passively listening to music. You do not have to guess your own figure. The latency test plays a short chirp, records it back through the microphone, cross-correlates the two, runs five times, takes the median and subtracts the travel time of sound over the distance you enter. That gives you a number for your speaker rather than a number from a spec sheet.

The overlap is smaller than it looks. Live Listen wins any time one person needs help hearing. A pass-through app wins any time a voice has to reach a group: announcements at a school fair, a toast, a tour guide, a coach across a gym.
