iPhone as a Microphone for a JBL Speaker
Yes. You can use your phone as a microphone for a JBL speaker: pair the JBL in iOS Settings, open a live microphone app, and your voice comes out of the speaker. But if your JBL is a PartyBox, look at the back panel first, because a PartyBox has a real 6.35 mm microphone jack and a cheap wired mic into that jack beats the wireless route every time.
Can I use my phone as a microphone for a JBL speaker?
The phone is the microphone. Nothing else. Your voice hits the iPhone's own mic, the app raises the level and shapes the tone, and the result plays out through whatever audio route iOS has already selected. If that route is a JBL Flip, the Flip plays it. The speaker is doing exactly what it does with music.
You can hear the whole chain before you go near a JBL. The browser mic monitor on this site runs the same signal path in a tab: mic in, gain from 0 to 200 percent, level meter, out through whatever you are already playing through. If it sounds right there it will sound right through the speaker, minus the Bluetooth delay covered below.
The reverse does not work. A JBL cannot hand its own microphone to your phone, and most of the range has no microphone at all. JBL PartyBox: use the microphone jack, not the app
The PartyBox line is the exception in JBL's range, and the reason this question gets confusing answers online. PartyBox models carry a 6.35 mm (quarter inch) microphone input on the panel, the larger ones add a second jack for a guitar, and several ship with mics in the box: the Encore comes with two wireless mics, and JBL lists two wireless mics with the On-The-Go as well. Bundles vary by region and by revision, so check JBL's current spec sheet for the exact model you are buying rather than trusting a review of last year's version.
If you own one, ignore the phone for anything where timing matters. A wired mic in the 6.35 mm jack skips the codec and the radio link entirely and goes straight to the speaker's own amplifier. The speaker still runs its own DSP on that mic channel, echo and EQ among other things, so the path is not perfectly instant, but what the DSP adds is small enough that you hear yourself as you speak. A dynamic mic with a 6.35 mm plug costs less than a takeaway. Buy that first.

The small models are the ones people get wrong most often. No JBL Go and no JBL Clip has ever had a microphone input jack, and the current Go 3 and Clip 4 and 5 have no aux input either. The older Go 2 does have a 3.5 mm aux socket, and the Clip 2 and Clip 3 have a short 3.5 mm cable built into the strap, either of which will take a line-level source such as your phone's headphone output.
The JBL Flip microphone input question
There is no JBL Flip microphone input. The Flip 4 had a speakerphone mic for calls and JBL dropped the speakerphone from the Flip 5 onward, but that is not an input: it sends your voice to the phone on a call, it does not amplify you into the garden. The Flip 4's 3.5 mm socket expects a line-level source, so a dynamic mic plugged in with an adapter is far too quiet without a preamp.
The JBL Charge microphone question
Same answer, same history. A JBL Charge has never had a microphone input. The Charge 3 could take a phone call through the speaker, and JBL removed that built-in speakerphone microphone from the Charge 4 onward. The Charge 4 kept its 3.5 mm aux socket; the Charge 5 dropped the socket too. On a Charge 4 or an Xtreme 3, a cable from the phone's headphone adapter into that aux socket is worth doing with a mic app: it takes the Bluetooth link out of the chain and leaves you a wire's worth of lag.
What the app does, and what iOS does
iOS Settings connects the speaker. Pairing happens only there, because Apple exposes no public pairing API to App Store apps. Route selection is nearly as closed: an app can put the system route picker on screen for you to tap, but it cannot switch the output to your JBL on its own. A live mic app takes the phone's input and plays it into the output iOS has already chosen.

- Play music for a few seconds to confirm the JBL is the output.
- Open the mic app and start it. Your voice follows the music.
- Set the level while talking, and pick a tone that suits the room.
Try the same controls in your browser before installing anything. The gain range, the meter and the voice presets behave the same way; only the output route differs.
If the JBL is quiet but the phone looks loud, check the phone's volume rocker while the app is running. The phone and the speaker keep separate volume levels on a Bluetooth route, and people find the app's gain slider long before they notice system volume at 20 percent.
The delay, and what it costs you
Bluetooth adds a delay that lives in the codec and in the receiving speaker's buffer. No app on your phone can take that out, and anything claiming otherwise is selling you a story. Here are the figures worth citing, and who says them, because sources disagree.

An iPhone has no aptX support at all, so the 40 ms figure quoted in Bluetooth marketing is not available to you on any JBL. You get AAC, or SBC if the link falls back. The codec-by-codec latency comparison goes through where each number comes from.
Your own JBL's number is the only one that matters, and you can measure it. The acoustic loopback latency test plays a short chirp, records it back through the mic, cross-correlates the two and repeats five times, subtracting the travel time through air. Run it with the JBL as the output for a figure that is yours.
For context: under about 20 ms is unnoticeable, 40 to 50 ms is where lip sync starts to look wrong on video, and over about 100 ms feels like a bad phone call. Hearing your own voice return is far more demanding than listening passively, which is why a delay you would not notice in a film is maddening when you are the one talking.
Karaoke on a JBL, honestly
Singing over a Bluetooth link is where this falls down. You hear your voice a beat after you produce it, which pulls most people off the beat within a line. On a PartyBox, use the microphone jack. On a Flip or a Charge, accept that karaoke will be rough and read the karaoke delay guide.
Speech is different. A toast, a tour guide talking to twenty people in a garden, a teacher at the far end of a hall: the audience hears one voice, not two, so the delay is invisible to them. That is the job this setup is good at.
Feedback, and where to stand
Never hold the phone near the JBL with the gain up. The speaker's output re-enters the phone's microphone, goes round the loop and builds into a howl in under a second. Distance is the fix: get the phone behind the speaker, or several metres in front of it, and point the JBL away from you.
A metre or two of separation minimum, gain no higher than the room needs, speaker facing the audience rather than the person holding the phone. If a howl starts, drop the gain first and move second. A high-pass filter trims the low rumble feedback likes to start on, but it does not repeal the physics. Ten minutes of testing beats an hour of apologising
Do this in the actual room, with the actual speaker, before people arrive.
- Connect the JBL and play music through it, so you know the route is right.
- Start the mic app, walk to the far corner, and have someone say when they stop hearing you clearly.
- Find the gain where feedback begins, back off two steps, leave it there.
- Measure the delay once, so you are not guessing.
- Charge the phone. A live audio chain drains it faster than you expect.
