Phone as a Microphone for a Bose Speaker
You can use your phone as a microphone for a Bose speaker, but only in one direction and never without a delay. The phone does the listening and the Bose does the amplifying, over the same Bluetooth link that already carries your music. That is true on an iPhone and on an Android phone alike. Which Bose you own decides how well it works: the S1 Pro has real microphone inputs and should get a cable, while SoundLink and Portable models have none and can only take the wireless route.
Can I use my phone as a microphone for a Bose speaker?
Yes, with a pass-through app. It opens the phone's microphone, applies gain and any filtering you ask for, and plays the result out of whatever audio route the operating system is already using. If that route is your SoundLink Flex, your voice comes out of the SoundLink Flex. There is no Bose-specific handshake. As far as the speaker knows, it is receiving ordinary Bluetooth audio, exactly as if you had started a podcast.
That also sets the boundaries. The app never touches pairing and it cannot pull audio the other way. Which Bose model you have changes the answer
Bose sells two very different kinds of speaker and they behave nothing alike here. The consumer SoundLink and Portable line is a sealed Bluetooth box with no way in for a microphone. The S1 Pro line is a powered PA cabinet with mixer channels on the back.

Check the back panel before you buy a cable. Aux jacks have been dropped and re-added across SoundLink generations, and a line input is not a microphone input. The S1 Pro deserves a cable, not an app
This is the one case where the honest advice is to skip the phone. The S1 Pro gives you two combo XLR/quarter-inch channels with their own gain, tone controls and reverb, plus an aux channel for a 3.5 mm source. A basic dynamic vocal microphone plugged into channel 1 beats any phone-over-Bluetooth arrangement on every axis that matters: it rejects the room, it has no radio link in the path, and it puts the gain knob under your thumb instead of behind a screen.
If you own an S1 Pro and you are shopping for a way to make a phone work as the microphone, buy a microphone and a cable instead. It is cheaper than most accessories people try first and it ends the latency conversation. Keep the phone for backing tracks on the aux channel, where delay does not matter because nothing is monitored live.

How much delay you will hear
Nobody can tell you your exact number. It depends on the codec your phone negotiates, the buffer inside the Bose, and the app in between. Published figures disagree with each other, which is itself worth knowing.

Under about 20 ms passes unnoticed, 40 to 50 ms is where lips and sound visibly separate, and past 100 ms it feels like a bad phone call. Android hands you one lever an iPhone does not have. Developer options includes a Bluetooth audio codec picker, so you can force SBC or AAC, or pick aptX, aptX HD or LDAC on a handset that offers them. Since Android 8.0 the platform can negotiate all of those on top of mandatory SBC, but only the LDAC encoder ships in AOSP itself. aptX and aptX HD are proprietary Qualcomm code that each manufacturer licenses, so whether those entries appear depends on the phone in your hand and on what the Bose agrees to. Changing codec moves the number somewhat, not dramatically, and a Bose that only speaks SBC and AAC will ignore the choice entirely. An iPhone sends AAC and gives you no picker at all.
Rather than trust any of those ranges, measure your own Bose. The browser latency test plays a 30 ms chirp, records it back through the microphone, cross-correlates the two, runs five times and reports the median with the air travel time for your stated distance already subtracted. That number is your room, your speaker, your phone.
Feedback, and how to not cause it
A microphone and a loudspeaker in one room is a loop waiting to start, and the Revolve in particular throws sound in every direction, so the loop closes easily.
Stand behind the speaker, not in front of it. Point the phone away from the cabinet. Raise gain in small steps and stop at the first hint of ringing, not after it. If you hear a rising tone starting, lower gain immediately rather than covering the microphone, which does nothing to the gain structure.
The app helps in one specific way: it reads the live output route, and while that route is still the phone's own speaker it caps gain at 60% and warns you, because a phone amplifying itself is guaranteed howl. Setting it up, step by step
- Pair the Bose in your phone's Bluetooth settings: Settings, Bluetooth on an iPhone, Settings, Connected devices on most Android phones. iOS exposes no public pairing API at all, so no iPhone app can do this step for you. Android does give apps pairing APIs, but a pass-through app has no reason to touch them, because it plays into whichever output the system has already selected.
- Play a few seconds of music and confirm it comes out of the Bose. This proves the route before a microphone is involved.
- Open the mic app, start it with gain low, and speak at normal volume from behind the speaker.
- Raise gain until you are comfortably loud, then back off one notch.
- Pick a preset. Normal for speech, Warm to take the edge off a thin phone microphone, Megaphone for outdoor calling. Radio and Robot are novelties.

What this setup cannot do
- It cannot pair your Bose. Your phone's own Bluetooth settings do that, on iOS and on Android.
- It cannot remove the delay. No app can deliver zero-latency audio over Bluetooth, because the delay lives in the codec and in the receiver's buffer, both of which sit outside any app's reach.
- It cannot turn the phone into a receiver. The phone is the microphone. It will not play audio coming from the Bose, and where your Bose does have a speakerphone microphone of its own, it cannot borrow that either. Asking for a Bluetooth device's microphone forces the link off stereo A2DP and onto narrowband HFP, which is exactly why Bluetooth sound quality drops when the mic turns on. - It does not shut Android users out. The app is free on both stores: on the App Store for iPhone and iPad running iOS 15.1 or later, and on Google Play for Android. The signal chain, the eight presets and the feedback guard are the same on either one.
- Nothing is captured. The audio is processed on the device and played straight out. There is no account and nothing is recorded or stored.
So is it good enough
For announcements at a barbecue, a toast, a guided tour or a small classroom, yes. A hundred and something milliseconds is irrelevant when nobody is watching your lips and nothing has to lock to a beat. For karaoke, for singing along to music playing through the same speaker, or for a paid gig, the delay will fight you, and the answer is a cable into an S1 Pro.
