Can a Bluetooth Speaker Take a Microphone Input?
No, in almost every case. Ask whether a Bluetooth speaker can receive a microphone and the honest answer is that the Bluetooth music profile only runs one way, from phone to speaker, and a pocket speaker's aux jack has no microphone preamp behind it to lift a mic signal even if you got one plugged in. The direction that does work is the reverse: the phone becomes the microphone, and the speaker keeps doing the only job it knows.
Can a Bluetooth speaker receive a microphone? Three different questions
People asking this are usually asking one of three things, and each has its own answer.
- "Can I pair a wireless microphone to my speaker?" No, not a standard Bluetooth one. A speaker is an A2DP sink: it accepts a stereo stream from a source device, and two sinks cannot talk to each other. A few karaoke microphone products get around that with their own dual-role hardware, which is also why those mics only work with the speaker they shipped with.
- "Can I plug a microphone into it?" Only if the speaker was built with a microphone jack, and most portable ones were not. A 3.5 mm aux socket is a line-level input, which is a different animal.
- "Does a Bluetooth speaker have a microphone I can talk into?" Some do and some do not, and where it exists it is useless here: that mic feeds calls and voice assistants, and its audio travels to your phone.

There is no microphone preamp inside a portable speaker
This is the physical reason, and it does not care how clever your workaround is. A dynamic handheld microphone puts out a signal measured in millivolts. Line level, the voltage a speaker's aux input expects, is measured in hundreds of millivolts to over a volt. The gap is a factor of several hundred. A microphone preamp exists to close that gap, and a compact Bluetooth speaker's aux input has no preamp stage behind it. Any preamp inside the box is wired to the speaker's own tiny speakerphone microphone, not to the jack, and there is no way to route the jack through it.
So when people connect a microphone to a Bluetooth speaker through the aux jack, the usual report is that it technically works and is far too quiet to use. Turning the speaker's volume to maximum amplifies the noise floor along with the whisper. Condenser microphones make it worse, because they need power as well as gain. A studio condenser wants phantom power, usually 48 V and sometimes 12 or 24 V, and a speaker's aux jack supplies none of it. The small electret condensers built into consumer gear expect a few volts of plug-in power instead, which an aux input does not provide either.
An input labelled "AUX IN" or "LINE IN" is not a Bluetooth speaker mic input. If the manual does not say "MIC", assume it is line level and that a bare microphone will be inaudible in it.
The built-in mic is for speakerphone, not for a PA
Some speakers, the Bose SoundLink range among them, have a small mic hole and a call button, though plenty of popular models have dropped that hardware over the years, JBL's Flip and Charge included; check the spec sheet for your exact model and generation rather than assuming. Where the mic does exist it is wired for exactly two jobs: hands-free phone calls and wake words for a voice assistant. When it engages, the mic audio is sent up to your phone. It is not routed to the speaker's own amplifier, and no iPhone app can ask it to be, because iOS exposes that microphone only as a call input.
There is a second cost. A Bluetooth link holds one profile at a time, so the moment anything asks for that microphone, the connection drops A2DP stereo for the mono headset profile. The speakers that genuinely take a microphone
They exist, and they are a different product category: party and PA speakers with a real analog input stage. A JBL PartyBox has 6.35 mm mic and guitar inputs. A Bose S1 Pro has combo XLR/TRS channels with gain controls. Some karaoke soundbars include mic jacks too. On all of them the microphone is wired, and the Bluetooth radio is a separate music source that happens to share the same mixer.

Make the phone the transmitter instead
Turn the problem around. Your phone already has a decent microphone, an audio engine, and an established Bluetooth connection to the speaker. Instead of pushing a microphone into the speaker, run the phone's mic through the phone and let the existing stream carry it. The speaker receives what it always receives.
Two things are worth stating plainly. First, the pairing is still done by you, in iOS Settings. No app pairs Bluetooth devices, because iOS gives apps no API to do it; an app plays into whichever output route iOS has already selected. What the phone-as-mic route costs you: delay
Being straight about this matters more than any feature. Bluetooth adds delay, it lives in the codec and the receiver's buffer, and no app removes it. There is no such thing as zero latency over Bluetooth, and any listing implying otherwise is describing something the radio cannot do.

Under about 20 ms is unnoticeable, 40 to 50 ms is where lip sync starts to look wrong, and beyond about 100 ms it feels like a bad phone call. Put the speaker in front of you and point it away from the phone, keep the phone behind the speaker's line of fire, and raise the gain slowly until you hear the room start to bloom, then back off. The speaker itself
Small drivers give up on the bottom end long before the specification sheet suggests, and a speaker used for speech does not need bass at all. Run the sweep in the speaker test and listen for the point where the tone stops moving air, plus the channel checks in case one side has quietly died. Five minutes of this in an empty room beats finding out during an announcement.
