Yes, a phone works as a microphone for announcements, and for a classroom, a coach on a touchline, or a tour group of twenty standing close together it works well. The limit is almost never the phone. It is the speaker you send the sound to, and how big and how noisy the room is.

What one phone and one speaker actually cover

The chain is short. The phone's microphone picks up your voice, the app routes it to whatever output iOS is already using, and a portable Bluetooth speaker turns it back into sound. Nothing is recorded, nothing is stored, and no server is involved, so the app needs no network at all and works with the phone offline. One caveat on airplane mode: switching it on also switches Bluetooth off on iOS, so you have to switch Bluetooth back on afterwards and let the speaker reconnect before any of this works.

Two pieces of physics decide how far it carries. Sound from a single speaker falls about 6 dB every time you double your distance from it, and speech has to sit roughly 10 to 15 dB above the background noise before listeners stop working at it. Together they give a blunt table.

In the top half of that table, a phone and a speaker you own already is a good answer at no cost. How to use a phone as a microphone for announcements

The app does not choose the speaker. iOS does, so the order matters.

  1. Connect the speaker in Settings → Bluetooth first. No iPhone app can pair a Bluetooth device for you; there is no public API for it, so pairing always happens in Settings.
  2. Play a few seconds of music and confirm it comes out of the speaker, not the phone. That proves iOS moved the route.
  3. Open the mic app and start it. It plays into whatever route iOS has chosen, be that a Bluetooth speaker, a soundbar, AirPlay, or a cable.
  4. Start the volume low, have someone talk into the phone, and walk to the back of the room. Raise the level until the back row is comfortable, then stop.

If the output is still the phone's own speaker, the app caps gain at 60 percent and says so. A microphone a few centimetres from the speaker reproducing it is the textbook feedback loop; at full gain it howls within a second. The cap lifts once Bluetooth, headphones, or AirPlay take the route.

Where to put the speaker and where to stand

Geometry buys more headroom than any setting in the app.

  • Speaker in front of you, facing the audience. Never behind you, never beside your head. The microphone wants the quietest part of the speaker's pattern, which is behind it.
  • Get it up to head height. A speaker on the floor fires into knees and carpet. A table or cheap tripod is worth several dB of usable level.
  • Hold the phone a hand's width from your mouth, slightly off to one side, and keep that distance. Halving the mouth-to-microphone distance is worth roughly 6 dB at no extra feedback risk, and speaking across the phone rather than into it keeps plosives from thumping. The usual failure is drifting the phone down mid-sentence and turning the volume up to compensate.

The megaphone preset, and what it does

The presets that flatter a voice in a demo are wrong here. Deep and Warm push the low end up, and low end is what a small plastic speaker cannot reproduce and what feeds back first.

Megaphone is the announcement preset: a high-pass at 600 Hz in front of everything, a narrow band-pass at 1.5 kHz, and a sharp 12 dB lift at 2.5 kHz. That region is where consonants live, and consonants carry meaning across a room. On its own it sounds thin and nasal. At 15 metres it is much clearer.

All eight presets are on the browser voice-effects page with their real frequency-response curves drawn, and you can A/B a plain amplified voice against a filtered one in the live monitor. Do that at home, not in front of the room.

Echo reduction adds a high-pass that climbs with the setting, starting near 50 Hz, and switches the iOS audio session into voice-chat mode. Turn it on for speech in a reverberant hall, off if music goes through the same chain, because it thins music out.

The delay, and who actually notices it

An iPhone sends audio over Bluetooth using AAC, which sources put at roughly 100 to 200 ms end to end. A2DP overall is usually quoted at 100 to 300 ms, where Hollyland's figures sit. SBC is quoted as both 100 to 150 ms and 150 to 300 ms depending on who you read; the sources genuinely disagree. LC3 with LE Audio is around 20 to 30 ms per the Bluetooth SIG, and Qualcomm's aptX Low Latency about 40 ms, but neither helps: the iPhone has no aptX support at all.

No app, this one included, can give you zero-latency audio over Bluetooth. The delay lives in the codec and in the receiver's own buffer, both downstream of anything an app can touch.

For announcements it mostly does not matter: your audience hears one delayed voice with nothing to compare it against. It bites on you instead. Hearing your own voice return a beat late is far more distracting than passive listening, and past about 100 ms it feels like a bad phone call. Face the room and talk at your normal pace.

Two cases where it does matter: talking over music from a second device, which will not line up, and being filmed, where lip sync looks wrong around 40 to 50 ms of offset. Classroom, tour group, touchline

Classroom

This is what a classroom microphone app suits best. A speaker on a shelf at the front, Bright or Megaphone, moderate gain, and you stop pushing your voice all day. Teachers lose their voices to sustained effort, not peaks, so taking a few dB out of every sentence is the point.

Tour group

Be clear-eyed about what a tour guide microphone app is not. A professional guide system is a transmitter plus one receiver per listener, so everyone hears you at the same level whatever the traffic does. This is one speaker the group stands near. For 15 to 25 people who bunch up when asked, fine. For a group strung out along a street it will not work, and no setting changes that.

Touchline and car park

Outdoors there are no reflections to help, so range is purely speaker output. Carry the speaker, do not leave it on the ground. Using an iPhone as a PA system tops out around a group you could almost shout across; the gain is not reach, it is not wrecking your voice.

When to stop and get a real PA

  • More than roughly 60 to 80 listeners, or any room with sustained background noise.
  • Anything where being inaudible has a consequence: safety briefings, a ceremony, a paid event.
  • Anything needing both hands, movement well away from the speaker, or a camera rolling.

The five-minute check before you speak

  1. Charge both. Live audio keeps the radio and microphone awake and drains them.
  2. Connect the speaker in Settings and play music to confirm the route.
  3. Sweep the speaker to check nothing rattles or is dead; the speaker test page runs channels and a tone sweep in a minute.
  4. Speaker in front of you at head height, Megaphone or Bright, gain low, then raise it with someone standing at the back.
  5. Trigger feedback once deliberately so you know the ceiling, then back off.
  6. Silence notifications. A message tone at announcement volume is memorable for the wrong reason.
